As many of you know, I run a 3D printing YouTube channel (though I have been away for a few months this year so it's been a while since new videos have surfaced).
Anyway, last week I received an email from one of my subscribers.

He emailed myself along with a few others who run 3D printing channels with the hope in introducing us to an issue which threatens the open source nature of our shared interest.

He included a link to another YouTube video explaining the situation which is worth watching, but in short, several printer manufactures are breaking GPL's and locking their firmware illegally, preventing open source modifications.

I'd love to hear your opinions on the issue, and what you think we, as a community can do about it.

IMHO if it breaks the GPL then that company should really be boycotted it is what will kill the riprap community.

I have no beef with Closed source as long as it is original/licenced but taking open source items making modifications and then locking it against the GPL is just wrong In my book.

Also the major you tubers have already removed all mention of the company in Question

Perfectly put.   ~~

I've only just become aware of this and don't pretend to know the legal position that companies that break O.S. licenses are in.  Can they not be taken to court if they infringe on a GPL?  Who controls the GPL for Marlin?  Couldn't they start legal proceedings?

We had the same thing when the Rabbit flight controller people stole the multi wii firmware and locked it and branded it their own, nothing was ever done legally but every one boycotted the company and they soon stopped trading  ~~  :beer2:
